To create an expressive abstract composition based on real life subjects.
To develop an appreciation of the artwork created by Chuck Close.
To create a system of repeated patterns
This project introduced Year 4 students to the works of Chuck Close to give them a spring board for experimentation with colour and portraiture.
We started by shooting large head shots of students. The photos were changed into sketches on www.dumpr.net and then printed in b/w out on plain paper.
Each student traced their face print with a fine line black marker before drawing a Grid on it.

To color, the students had to think of their portraits as two sections: the face, the hair, the clothes as one and the background as the other. Starting with the background, they chose cool colours to work with. The rest was completed in warm colours.
